What types of taxes are there?
When selling goods and providing services, residents of Ontario must pay two types of taxes: provincial (PST) and federal (GST).
The provincial sales tax is 8%, however, a higher tax applies to the sale of alcoholic beverages in the province.
Meanwhile, the provincial tax does not apply to most food products, books, newspapers, certain categories of children’s clothing, and specialized equipment for people with disabilities.
The federal Goods and Services Tax is 7%. It does not apply to medical goods and services, food products, and certain other categories.
Moreover, in the province of Ontario, there is also income tax and property tax.

Tax Refunds for Visitors to Canada
Visitors to Canada may receive a partial refund of taxes (PST and GST) on the amount they spent on accommodation and goods taken home to their country of residence. For this, the visitor must be in Canada as a tourist and be able to provide original receipts for the goods purchased. To obtain the application forms, you need to call Revenue Canada, Visitor Rebate Program.
