Taking Tests WITHOUT Exchanging Driver's Licenses Issued Outside Ontario

Mon, Jun 6, 2022

If the country, province, or state where you obtained your license does not have an agreement with Ontario for exchanging driver’s licenses, you cannot simply replace your license with a local one. The conditions for obtaining an Ontario license depend on your driving experience.

More than two years of driving experience (without exchanging the license)

In this case, you will need to:

• take a written test on the rules of the road and traffic signs (you can practice knowledge of Ontario signs in Russian here)

• pass a vision test

Then you need to take the practical G2 driving test. You can schedule the test date immediately.

After this, you will receive a full license.

• pass a vision test

To obtain a full license, you need to pass two practical driving tests (G1 and G2).

You can schedule the date for the first test (G1) after you pass the written test and vision test.

After passing the G1 practical test, you won’t be able to take the G2 test right away. You must wait until you have a full year of driving experience. For example, if you obtained your foreign license 8 months ago, you can only take the G2 test in Ontario after another 4 months. After this test, you will receive a full license.
