Replacing a Driver’s Licence Issued Outside Ontario. Do You Need to Take Tests?

You may have to take certain tests to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for an Ontario licence. This depends on:

•how long you have been driving

•whether the country, province or state where you obtained your licence has an exchange agreement with Ontario

Full licence with more than two years of driving experience (with exchange)

In this case, when applying, you only need to pass a vision test.

Less than two years of driving experience (with exchange)

You must:

•pass a vision test after applying

•pass one practical driving test (G2 road test)

You will not be able to take the G2 test right away. You need to wait until you have accumulated two years of driving experience. For example, if you had held a driver’s licence in your home province, state or country for 21 months, you will have to wait another 3 months in Ontario before you can take the G2 test. After that, you will receive a full licence.
