Rights and Responsibilities of a Resident of Canada

Newly arrived immigrants and their family members have the right to live, study, and work in Canada as long as they remain permanent residents. They enjoy most of the social privileges available to Canadian citizens, but they are also required to pay the same taxes and obey the law.

At the same time, there are some restrictions for permanent residents:[[[]]

– they cannot participate in elections,

– they cannot work in positions that require a high degree of security clearance.

– if found guilty of criminal activity, they may face deportation from the country.

Permanent residents retain this status until they become Canadian citizens. Immigrants who come to Canada, obtain permanent resident status, and then return to their home country for an indefinite period of time will lose their permanent resident status.
