Est' takaya programma chto mne military zaplatit za medschool i dazhe stipendiu dast, esli ya zatem budu rabotat neskolko let v military. t.e. rabotaesh kak flight surgeon ili diving medical officer. oni ne sovsem vrachi t.k. oni ne imeut residency training, a residency training pridetsa konchat' kogda uidesh iz military. eto kruto??
vot flight surgeon mozhet rabotat' na air squadron s marines ili navy i proveriat ih esli oni zdorovie. im razreshaetsa letat' kak passagiri v fighter jets chto bi oni mogli "chuvstvovat' k kakomu stressu piloti podvergautsa", i piloti im inogda razreshaut brat'sya za shturval.

a dmo mogut rabotat' s divers, recon, ili navy seals. no ya poka ne znau esli im mozhno delat' chto to krome physicals. no vozmozhno im mozhno idti v combat scuba i halo schools. kruto??

look i am interested in the following program:
4yrs civilian medical school-military pays for it
1yr-military internship-similar to civilian internship except that i would be a Captain
3yrs-service in the military as general medical officer, diving medical officer, or flight surgeon.
then get out of military, do civilian residency like everybody else.

here is a description of navy flight surgeon training:
http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/NAMI/Academics/flightsurgeon.htm
http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/NAMI/Academics/photo.htm
and here is DMO training:
http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/numi/umoc/umoc.htm

So which of those jobs is cooler? FS would be assigned to some air squadron where his job would entail doing physicals on the crew members and flying on various planes to evaluate the stress that crew members are subjected to. While DMO might be assigned to various diving communities, like seals, eod, etc and they would again mainly do physicals. I'm not sure if they get to do any combat scuba. Does it make them more prestigious than lawyers or professors??

hahaha backinsssr, i am interested in american military, not in russian or israeli. american doctors never die on the battlefield. only 1 american doctor died in iraq and it was under very bizarre circumstances. it is because doctors are not expendable.

now as a navy flight surgeon i would probably be stationed in san diego or in florida. and i would get to fly places whenever my unit deployed. but i dont know enough about DMOs.

я подозреваю, что в реале его просто нет. природа избавилась бы от него путем естественного отбора.

here is what i got about flight surgeons from another forum:
My experience is in a P-3 squadron (a land-based, not carrier based aircraft). Our Flight Surgeon deployed with us and got as much flight time (passenger/observer) as they wanted. Occasionally, they might get some "stick time" at the pilot's discretion.

P-3 squadrons typically deploy to a region of the world as a main basing point (ie Mediterranean, Japan, Indian Ocean) and from there operate smaller "detachments" in the region. The FS ran his own clinic (facilities, corpsmen, etc) at the main basing point, and usually flew out to the detachments once in a while to see how things were going.

As I said, our FS's got as much flight time as they wanted. We had one FS who loved flying and came along whenever he could. Whenever we went to another Navy base that had other aircraft types (for example, North Island in San Diego), he'd come along and head to the local squadrons, find their flight surgeon to buddy up with and try to weasel a ride in their aircraft! He got time in jets, helos, etc. He said his goal was to get a ride in every aircraft the Navy had.

At the other extreme was his replacement FS in our squardon. He didn't come around the squadron much and mostly stuck to his clinic.

My point is that it's what you make of it."

"A flight surgeon in HSL-44 (about a year before my time there in the 90s) was getting "stick time" in a 60B when he decided to see how fast he could move the collective towards the deck resulting in a "hard landing" that was really more like a class B which had to be taken away on a flatbed - nice work, doc. With the S-3 now on it's way out and the end of dual controlled A/C in the TACAIR community, the FS isn't going to be getting any stick time. In my Prowler squadron, our FS flew maybe 2-3 times per quarter and never in an operational mission.
" -etot chelovek govorit chto FS dali poletat' na vertolete i on neudachno prizemlilsya na boevoi korabl'(class B znachit serioznii damage dlya vertoleta, class A eto kogda vertolet polnost'u razbilsya), i poetomu vipuskaut novie vertoleti na kotorih tolko odin dvizhok chto bi FS ne mogli bolshe prinimat' uchastie. no na fixed wing aircraft situacia luchshe dlya vrachei:)

blin, mozhet airforce luchshe navy.

"There are also opportunities for operational medicine in the AF, most notably as a special operations flight surgeon. While at the intro course to USAFSAM for HPSP I met a former chief flight surgeon of AFSOC (Col. ***, who runs the above course) and another Spec Ops FS (Col. ***). As it was explained by Col. **, selection is pretty competetive, basically hand-picking by whoever is Chief FS of AFSOC. After selection there is another year of training before getting out in the field ie. wherever AFSOC units might go and with whomever they might go with (sister services' SOC forces). Col. *** worked most frequently with special tactics teams (PJ's and Combat Controllers. Note: check out specialtactics.com, and read Black Hawk Down and The Perfect Storm for a little insight into these guys who are probably the least known bad-a**es of the spec-ops community), but he also worked occasionally with TAC-P's (which would entail working with the army). Along with other training, he was sent to both the NOAA and navy Dive Medical Officer (DMO) courses, making him one of the few DMO's in the AF. He said that when he deployed he often did so just as the other ground-pounders. While his experience might not be reflective of every Spec Ops FS, it does give an indication to the opportunities available."
