Embassy of the Russian Federation in Canada on terrorist attacks in Volgograd

Over the past 24 hours tens of peaceful civilians including women and children fell victim to terrorist attacks in Volgograd. Presently investigations are under way, medical help is being delivered and lists of casualties are being updated.

This strike, which was cynically delivered on the eve of New Year celebrations, is another terrorist attempt to open an “internal front” and spread panic and chaos, give rise to interdenominational enmity and conflict in the Russian society.

We will not back down and will continue ruthless and consistent fight against the insidious enemy who knows no boundaries and can only be stopped by joint effort. The terrorist raids in Volgograd were of similar nature as terrorist attacks in the USA, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Nigeria and other countries and the same masterminds are behind them. As terrorist group leaders such as Doku Umarov continue to make openly provocative statements calling for more triggermen to join the terrorist war and unite forces under the banner of jihad, the malignity of certain views of politicians and “political strategists” who are still trying to separate “good” terrorists from the “bad” depending on geopolitical goals becomes more obvious.

Such “kimbling” has more than once lead to tragic consequences. Terrorism is always a crime, and punishment for it should be inevitable. Now as never before we need unified condemnation of terrorism and true international solidarity in countering terrorism and the ideology of violence and extremism which it depends on. We would like to extend our deep gratitude to all the world leaders who, following the UN Security Council statement from December 29, 2013, strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Volgograd within the first hours. We highly appreciate the solidarity voiced by many countries, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and representatives of other international organizations.

We consider this to be a testimony of the global community to boost the fight against terrorist wherever they may be and whatever slogans they may use to justify their inhumane crimes.
